Enterprise Resource Planning systems (ERP for short), can revolutionize a businesses processes.  ERP can help managers gain control over their information and processes in areas like accounting, inventory, purchasing, production and sales.  Many owners, managers and CEO's long for this 'ideal', but how can you achieve it?

Here are some thoughts on choosing and successfully implementing an ERP system in the Vietnam context.

A common question for companies operating in Vietnam, local and foriegn alike, is "are we ready for ERP?"  This should be your starting point... of course it is not an easy one to answer but here are some 'clues'... do have you written policies and procedures that ARE followed in your daily operations?  The basic point is how mature are your business practices?  If they are being changed from day to day you will almost certainly fail at successfully implementing an ERP system.  If you think you are ready, then you can start to ask the next set of questions which include the following...

Which system is right for us?

In Vietnam the major options are, SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle, Exact, ACCPAC (kind of), Sun Systems (TRG), and open source offering like OpenBravo.  If you want to make life harder for yourself you can go with the local offering such as Lemon3 - but I wouldn't recommend it!

See who is using these systems in country now.. Personnally I think that Exact and MS Dynamics offer the best value for money.  With Exact being the clear winner overall in the 'medium' sized company category.  I also like OpenBravo - open source so you have much more control if you need to do lots of customization and if you have lots of users it will save you a fortune in license fees.

How long will it take, where do we start?

Most serious implementations take 6 months or more.  There are ways to speed this up but this will depend on many factors including the consultants you choose, the attitude and aptitude of your staff and key users and your budget - both in time and in money.

Give me a call if you want some free advice on which system might suit you or just to check if you are ready...
